Following by stages

Genesis 12:1-3 - The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

God gave Abraham both instructions and promises. But those promises weren't things that could be fulfilled in a day, or a week, or a few months, or even a few years. God gave Abraham an assignment to fulfill, but the end results were things that Abraham had to wait for. And even the assignment was something that held a great deal of waiting, because the assignment itself wasn't something that Abraham could follow in a week, or a month, or a few years.

Genesis 12:9 - Then Abram continued traveling south by stages toward the Negev.

"Continued" and "by stages"... this was obedience, this was waiting, this was faithfulness, this was a holding-zone of sorts for Abraham. He knew where he'd been, he knew something of where he was going, but the "getting there" was in stages. And he made mistakes and bad choices along the way. But those mistakes and bad choices didn't keep God from fulfilling His plans and promises in Abraham's life. Abraham got back on track, and kept going - moving steadily toward God's future for him.
